About Preeti 2 Unicode

Preeti 2 Unicode is a free, browser-based tool for converting legacy Preeti-encoded Nepali text into standard Unicode. It was built for one practical purpose: to make old Nepali documents readable again without asking anyone to upload private files to a server.

Why this tool exists

For years, Preeti was the default way to type Nepali on a computer. The font mapped Devanagari glyphs onto Latin keyboard positions, so documents looked correct only on machines with the Preeti font installed. Government records, newspaper archives, academic papers, and everyday correspondence were all created this way.

That encoding does not work on modern devices. A Preeti file sent by email, opened on a phone, or published on a website shows meaningless Latin characters. Unicode solves the problem by storing Nepali with standard Devanagari codepoints that every platform understands. Preeti 2 Unicode makes that conversion quick and accessible.

How it works

The converter uses a standard Preeti-to-Unicode mapping table covering vowels, consonants, vowel marks, conjuncts, half-forms, the virama, numerals, and punctuation. Auto mode keeps English words and numbers unchanged, while Convert all as Preeti processes every character for fully Preeti-encoded documents.

You can paste text or upload .txt, .docx, .rtf, .odt, and .csv files up to 25 MB. Results can be copied immediately or downloaded as .txt, .docx, .pdf, or .csv. The complete format details are in the documentation.

Privacy by default

All processing happens inside your browser. There is no backend, no file upload, no account system, and no analytics or tracking script. Your text stays on your device for the entire session. This makes the tool suitable for legal drafts, financial records, medical notes, and other documents you would not send to an unknown server.

Who it is for

The tool is used by individuals recovering old personal files, offices digitizing records, publishers migrating archives, students and researchers working with Nepali sources, and developers who need clean Unicode input for websites and applications. It is free, requires no signup, and has no usage limits or watermarks.

Built as a static site

Preeti 2 Unicode is built with Astro and Tailwind CSS v4 and deployed as a fully static site. There are no server routes and no database, which keeps the privacy promise simple to verify: there is nowhere for your text to go.
