Preeti to Unicode Converter Documentation
Everything you need to convert Preeti-encoded Nepali text to standard Unicode: the supported formats, the two conversion modes, accuracy details, and how your files are handled.
Quick start
- Add your text. Paste Preeti text into the input box on the converter page, or upload a supported file by clicking the drop zone or dragging a file onto it.
- Choose a conversion mode. Auto mode converts Preeti words and leaves English text, email addresses, and numbers unchanged. Convert all as Preeti processes every character.
- Review and export. The Unicode preview updates as you type. Copy the result to your clipboard or download it as .txt, .docx, .pdf, or .csv.
Supported input formats
Swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.
| Format | Extension | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pasted text | None | Best for single paragraphs and quick checks |
| Plain text | .txt | Read as UTF-8 with a Windows-1252 fallback |
| Word document | .docx | Paragraph breaks are preserved |
| Rich Text Format | .rtf | Text content is extracted from older word processors |
| OpenDocument Text | .odt | Works with LibreOffice and OpenOffice files |
| Spreadsheet | .csv | Each cell is converted; rows and columns stay intact |
Maximum file size: 25 MB.
Output formats
- .txt — Plain UTF-8 Unicode text that opens in any editor or app.
- .docx — A Word document you can edit in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice.
- .pdf — A print-ready file generated locally in your browser.
- .csv — A spreadsheet saved with a UTF-8 BOM so Excel displays Nepali correctly.
Conversion modes
Auto mode is the default. It detects Preeti-encoded words and converts them while leaving ordinary English words, URLs, email addresses, and numbers unchanged. Use it for mixed documents where Nepali and English appear together.
Convert all as Preeti runs every character through the mapping table. Use it when the entire document was typed in Preeti and Auto mode leaves some Nepali words unchanged.
Accuracy and limitations
The mapping table covers independent vowels, vowel marks, consonants, conjuncts such as क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, and श्र, half-forms, the virama, Devanagari numerals ०–९, and the danda (।). Standard Preeti-encoded Nepali text converts reliably.
Custom ligatures, damaged text, or documents typed with a different non-Unicode font may need manual correction. If a word looks wrong, try the other conversion mode first, then check the original character sequence. No converter can recover text that was already lost before conversion.
Privacy and file handling
Every conversion runs inside your browser with client-side JavaScript. Files are read in memory and are never sent to a server. There is no account, no analytics script, and no stored copy of your text. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and continue converting.
Troubleshooting
- Output still looks garbled: confirm the source really uses Preeti encoding, then switch to Convert all as Preeti.
- English words changed: use Auto mode so plain English stays untouched.
- A DOCX file will not open: re-save it in Word or Google Docs as .docx, or export a .txt version and try again.
- PDF export takes a moment: large documents are rendered locally, so generation time grows with the amount of text.
